The number of people interested in cosmetic surgery is increasing in order to improve their physical appearance. Why do people go for operations to change the way they look? Do you think it is a positive or a negative development?

ESSAY #434 FROM OUR BOOK

Cosmetic procedures are becoming increasingly popular among people all across the world as everyone desires to look perfect. There are several reasons for people undergoing cosmetic surgery. While there are certain advantages of this trend, I consider it to be a negative development on the whole.

One of the most common reasons why more and more people are undergoing cosmetic surgery is the influence of the media. Movies and celebrities have set impossible beauty standards, and these are nearly impossible to achieve without plastic surgery. Another reason for causing people and especially adolescents to go for such surgeries is bullying and body-shaming by peers. Bullying has an effect on the psychological functioning of people and this in turn increases their desire for cosmetic surgeries.

There are definitely a few advantages of growing popularity of such surgeries. To begin with, it increases people’s self-confidence and esteem. In other words, when individuals think they look good, they become more outgoing and social. Furthermore, Cosmetic surgery can have health benefits as well. For example, there are circumstances where rhinoplasty not only improves the appearance of a patient’s nose, but also makes it much easier for the individual to breathe by clearing the air passages of the nasal cavity.

However, I also believe that the drawbacks of cosmetic surgery can be much more severe. Firstly, cosmetic surgeries are expensive, and this means that they are unaffordable for many people. In effect, this leads to people taking loans for such surgeries and going into debt. Secondly, cosmetic surgeries are addictive, and some people go for multiple surgeries in a quest to achieve their perfect body shape. Multiple procedures can have negative effects on an individual’s muscles and skin. Finally, such surgeries are creating a culture of vanity. The young generation today has a very limited perception of beauty, and they forget that the inner beauty is what actually matters.

To sum up, although there are some upsides to the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgeries, I consider its downsides far too many to consider it a positive development.
