Nowadays some older people choose to live in the retirement communities with other people, rather than living with their adult children. Is it a positive or negative development?

It is true that many aging parents are making the decision to live in a retirement home surrounded by agemates rather than staying with their children. I believe that this lifestyle choice is positive for both – the elderly and their adult children.

The most important benefit of elderly staying in a retirement community is that they have the company of fellow older adults, so they don’t feel lonely or alienated. Seniors often feel isolated and neglected when they stay with their adult children as nowadays people have hectic lifestyles and are busy with their jobs, careers and children. In a retirement community it is easy for elders to find people who share their interests, and they can enjoy a lot of social activities together. Socially active seniors have better mental health, tend to live longer and also have a lower risk of dementia

Secondly, living separately gives older people a feeling of independence.  Seniors feel secure and their self-esteem is intact as they don’t have to depend on their children. They also command more respect in the eyes of their children. Also, it is irrefutable that relationships become strong and meaningful when people are not under the same roof. Hence, if aged people are away from their children physically, both will be closer to each other emotionally.

Moreover, as people age, their health needs to be monitored regularly and these retirement homes have easy access to healthcare and medical facilities. Some seniors may need help with daily activities like bathing, eating, dressing etc. Living in such places ensures that seniors have staff that can take care of them and also gives their children the peace of mind that their parents are well taken care of. Finally, elderly can continue to prosper and prolong their good health through healthy eating options, yoga and exercise classes that such facilities offer.

To sum up, living in retirement homes is good for older people’s mental and physical health, and strengthens their bond with their adult children.
