IELTS Academic Essay 24th July 2021 India 9 AM

Some people think that in this modern world, getting old is entirely bad. However, other people believe that the life of old people is much better now than it was in the past. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is believed by some that the changes brought by modernization have made the lives of the elderly worse whereas others believe that it has improved their lives. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives, but I agree with the latter side.

On the one hand, the main reason given by those who believe that getting old is bad is that industrialization has reduced the social status of the elderly. Younger people have more wealth, power, and hold higher-level positions in companies. Older people are not given the same respect and reverence as in the past. Instead of valuing them for their experience and knowledge, the younger generation is too busy to even listen to them.

On the other hand, many people think life is better now for the elderly because new technologies and treatments are slowing down the aging process. The technological advancements in the medical field have made it possible to detect, prevent and treat many diseases prevalent among the old. Not only that, now there are new smart living devices that use VR, robotics, etc. that help the elderly live longer, healthier lives. For example, VR headsets for seniors with Alzheimer’s and fall detection watches.

I believe that many great inventions of the modern world have made the life of older people better. The Internet gives them the ability to stay connected to friends and families with messages, video chats, etc. They can shop online and even have their groceries delivered to their homes. They can learn new things and explore different places through the educational resources available online.

To sum up, getting old is better now as elders are spending the extra years of life in good health and they also have a more busy, entertaining life and a world that they can explore from the comfort of their home.
