Nowadays young people prefer to move to big cities. However, older people are the opposite and prefer to stay in the countryside. What are the positives and negatives of this trend?
Problems arising in cities because of urbanization
- Increasing pressure on the cities’ infrastructure. For example, as more and more people crowd into cities, water delivery and sewerage disposal systems are often found to be inadequate to cope with demand.
- The cost of living goes up. There is an increased need for housing, which pushes the property prices and rents.
- Urbanization is also leading to an increase in the number of vehicles on city roads. As a result, cities are getting congested and there is a rise in noise and air pollution.
- Fewer job opportunities: Job markets can be competitive, making it hard to find stable work.
Possible solutions for these problems
- The government should increase the quality of life in rural areas by providing urban facilities like hospitals, schools, shopping complexes, and entertainment facilities in rural areas.
- Governments should try to provide high speed connectivity between large cities and neighbouring villages so that people prefer to commute rather than migrate to cities.
- Governments should provide affordable housing options to city residents.
- Air contamination can be significantly reduced if the public transport system is improved and there are higher taxes on the use of private vehicles.
- Governments can help young people find jobs.
- Create employment in rural areas/villages by promoting industries to shift there through tax and other incentives.
Problems arising in villages
- Villages also have to bear the brunt of urbanization as the migration of young people leads to a shortage of agricultural labour impacting agricultural productivity.
- It affects the demographics as only the old people would be left behind and they would face isolation and depression.
