In the modern world, it is no longer necessary to use animals for food or use animal products, for instance, clothing and medicines. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Why some people are against animal experimentation
- Animals are also sentient beings, and people have no right to exploit them for their selfish motives.
- Animals are very different from humans and so what is tested on animals cannot be applied to humans.
- Using animals for cosmetic testing is inhumane. There are many non-animal testing alternatives like in vitro testing using human tissue cell cultures, computer models, and human volunteers.
Why some people are for animal experimentation
- New medicines and drugs should be first tested on animals and only if found safe should be given to humans. If any drug is not tested, it can create havoc. For example, in 1952, a drug, Thalidomide, was used for vomiting during pregnancy. All the children born had seal-like limbs. By the time it was known that thalidomide was responsible, it was too late.
- The effect of any drug can be seen over generations. It is known that the lifespan of guinea pigs used for experimentation is very small, only 3-4 years, and so the effect of drugs can be tested over generations. Even if humans volunteered for testing, it would take many years to test whether the effect passed from one generation to the other.
Why do some people think it is OK to exploit animals
- Humans are at the top of the food chain and killing animals for food adheres to the law of nature.
- Animals are vital in the medical field. By conducting experiments on animals, researchers have developed treatments to remedy fatal diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart attack and saved so many human lives. Research on mice, rats, and other animals has led to vaccines for polio, tetanus, measles, etc.
Why do some people think it is not justifiable to exploit animals
- Humans do not need to eat animals to survive. Research shows a plant based diet contains all the necessary vitamins and nutrients that a human body needs to thrive.
- Animals should not be exploited for products like wool, fur, and leather as humans do not require these products and nowadays a lot of synthetic substitutes are available.
Own View
It is unacceptable to harm innocent animals as they are sentient beings. People can survive on a vegetarian diet and there are so many faux meat options available for those who really crave meat. Also, our vanity is not worth the suffering of innocent animals. There are a multitude of cruelty-free cosmetics and household products that are not tested on animals.
