Team sports are a great vehicle for teaching and development of qualities in children. In this essay, I will discuss the skills children learn from team games and how these can be beneficial in their adult life.

There are many significant skills learnt by doing team sports. First, playing team sports teaches children to cooperate, to be less selfish, and to communicate with other children. When these children step into adult life, these communication skills prove very useful. They have to co-operate with their family members, colleagues, friends, and neighbours in daily life. Conflict management skills are also learnt when they do team sports. They have differences of opinion with other team members and they learn to manage tough situations very diplomatically. They learn how to make their voice heard, and also learn how to accept the suggestions of others.

Furthermore, team activities also broaden their social circle, as they get to interact with new friends and build their social network outside school. In addition, children learn sportsman-spirit, which is a very good trait. They learn to accept victory with modesty and defeat with grace. This is an important life skill. Children also learn to compete through team games. For instance, when their team plays with another team, they learn to compete with the other team, while cooperating with their own team.

Finally, team sports teach children discipline and time management. They know that if they don’t do time management they would never be able to keep up with academics and sports. All these skills bolster their self-esteem as a result of which they have better social relationships and better academic performance.

To conclude, I would reiterate that team activities teach important skills of life, which take them beyond the field, pitch, and court.
